Victoria’s inland holiday parks — away from the coast

There are three sweet spots. Late April through early May is autumn-colour season in the High Country, with Bright at its centre. October through December is the gentle window on the Murray — mild days and the river running full. June through early September is the snow season in the gateway towns (Mt Beauty, Mansfield, Tawonga), which book out months ahead; expect alpine road conditions and carry chains for the higher passes.

The High Country is alpine, lake-and-river country with cool summer temperatures, narrower winding sealed roads, and ski-season demand. The Murray River corridor is flat-paddock river country with hot dry summers, wide easy-access sites that suit big rigs, and a year-round fishing-and-paddlesteamer economy. The Great Alpine Road links them via Wangaratta and Bairnsdale if you want to do both in one loop.

Not the snowfields themselves — the resort roads (Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller) are seasonal alpine roads with chain requirements and resort-only parking. Caravanners base in the gateway towns: Mt Beauty for Falls Creek and Hotham, Mansfield for Mt Buller, Bright as a flexible alpine base. Daily resort transfers run from each town in season.

Most private caravan parks in the High Country and along the Murray operate year-round. A handful of higher-altitude parks (above ~700 m) close briefly mid-winter; check directly when booking June–August. Murray River parks operate twelve months a year and are commonly busiest in school holidays, the AFL Grand Final long weekend, and Easter.

Outside the busy weeks, usually yes — inland sites often run 10–25% cheaper than a comparable coastal park, simply because the crowds are thinner. That gap closes in peak times: Christmas to mid-January on the Murray, the July school holidays in the ski towns, and Easter and the AFL Grand Final long weekend just about everywhere. Travel in the shoulder seasons and your money goes a good deal further.

Three loops stand out. The Great Alpine Road climbs from Wangaratta through Bright and Mt Hotham, then drops to Bairnsdale — the highest sealed touring road in the country. The Murray run heads west from Albury-Wodonga through Yarrawonga, Cobram, Echuca, Swan Hill, and Mildura. And the Murray-to-Mountains rail-trail towns — Wangaratta, Beechworth, Bright — link up on sealed cycling track the whole way. Big rigs handle all three on the sealed sections; just watch your overhead clearance through the older rail-trail town centres.
